FAQ

Are the electrodes still OK or when do they need to be replaced?

from left to right: almost new, burned in, you should already order new electrodes, burned off.

How to exchange electrodes

Appropriate instructions can be found at the following link: https://www.tigres-cloud.de/public

The discharge “sprouts”. What could be the reason for this?

Check if there is water or oil in the compressed air

Error message ERROR_LOWPRESSURE. What is the cause?

At the compressed air inlet of the generator is an air pressure of less than 4bar.

Error message F_MIN. What is the cause?

  1. Check the electrodes for wear.
  2. Check cables between utility, transformer and tool for any damage.

Error message I_MAX. What is the cause?

  1. Check the electrodes for wear.
  2. Check the diameter around the opening of the nozzle, drill out if necessary.
  3. Check the air line between generator, transformer and tool for damage or bends.

There is no discharge on the tool, but the generator indicates a correct discharge. What is the cause?

  1. Check the cables between the transformer and the tool for damage.
  2. Inspect the transformer.

How large should the distance between the plasma nozzle and the treatment center be?

The distance depends on the material to be treated and the power of the plasma system. With a focus nozzle it is usually a distance between 5 and 10 mm, at a treatment speed of 10m per minute.

What is plasma?

Plasma is a mixture of neutral and charged particles. It is composed of positive and negative ions, electrodes, neutral and charged molecules. Radiation emission from these stimulated species produces the glow characteristic of plasmas.

What is Corona?

The “corona discharge” is a form of electrical discharge. Corona discharges conduct electric current in filaments of a discharge thunderstorm and are under high voltage. In addition to these filaments, there exists a secondary plasma with different properties than the one in the filaments.

What happens at the substrate surface during AD plasma / corona pretreatment?

Air plasmas are highly oxidative. This oxidation of the substrate surface leads to volatile compounds, so that adhering impurities are removed, the base material is ablated if necessary, and its surface is oxidized about 5 atomic layers deep. The surface that is activated in this way is perfectly prepared for printing, gluing and coating. However, the details of the chemical and physical processes are largely unknown, so process engineering studies are necessary.

What does the effectiveness of pretreatment depend on?

  1. Type of source: plasma / corona, type of discharge generation (different in terms of potential freedom, heat tone and power density)
    • Therefore, TIGRES offers a wide range of different equipment for pretreatment with electrical discharges at atmospheric pressure.
  2. Performance, speed, working distance
    • The energy and heat input is influenced by the set power, the speed (treatment time) and the distance of the source to the substrate surface
  3. Substrate: each material reacts differently
